National Mission for Clean Ganga(NMCG):
  • It was established in 2014.
  • It is being supported by State level Programme Management Groups (SPMGs) of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Aim:
  • It will accomplish the mandate of National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA).
  • It will help in:
    • Rejuvenation of the River Ganga
    • Maintaining minimum ecological flow in the River Ganga
National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA):
  • It was established  in 2009 at New Delhi.
Objectives:
  • It has been mandated as a planning, financing, monitoring and coordinating authority for strengthening the collective efforts of the Central and State governments for effective abatement of pollution and conservation of river Ganga.
  • Maintaining environmental flows in the river Ganga with the aim of ensuring water quality and environmentally sustainable development.
Composition of NGRBA:
  • Chairman – The Prime Minister of India
Members:
  • The Union Ministers concerned and the Chief Ministers of the States through which Ganga flows.
NGRBA Functions:
  • Development of  Ganga River Basin Management Plan.
  • Regulation of activities aimed at prevention, control and abatement of pollution.
  • To maintain water quality and to take measures relevant to maintain the river ecology in the Ganga basin states.
  • It has started the Mission Clean Ganga with a changed and comprehensive approach to champion the challenges posed to Ganga through four different sectors:
    • Wastewater management
    • Solid waste management
    • Industrial pollution
    • River front development
